Central Business District

CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT (CBD)

OLD POST OFFICE SQUARE (OPO)

The CBD is the business and hospitality center for the St. Louis region. The district is home to more than 3500 hotel rooms, seven million square feet of office space and 1,500 residents. In the past ten years, the CBD has attracted more than $1 billion in new capital investment. In 2010, work will begin on the $250 million Mercantile Exchange project to include a 100% makeover of the former One City Center office tower, St. Louis Center mall and Dillards department store. The new development will create a new hub for the district and include 375,000 square feet of new Class A office space, a 220 room Embassy Suites Hotel, 200 apartments and over 100,000 square feet of street level retail.

The Old Post Office Square neighborhood at the center of the CBD, is the historic heart of downtown. Just a few years ago, the area was virtually abandoned with over two million square feet of vacant space. Today, the blocks that surround the majestic, fully restored 1884 US Customs House and Post Office showcase an incomparable collection of restored architectural treasures and award winning public spaces. With its diverse residential offerings, thousands of professional and service jobs and an ever expanding registry of shops, restaurants, entertainment and services, Old Post Office Square (OPO) has earned a 98 out of 100 walkability score and is fulfilling its promise as the crown jewel of the Downtown turnaround.
