Award. This annual award recognizes leadership, extraordinary
vision and personal commitment in advancing the revitalization
of downtown St. Louis.

St. Louis has been named one of the
10 winners of The National Civic League's 2008 All-America
City Award. The Downtown Now! process, initiated with broad
community involvement and exceeding benchmark goals, was one of
three key stories, along with the River Ring project of the
Great Rivers Greenway District and ArtWorks' Boomerang Press,
which impressed the National Civic League Jury. The application
and presentation were spearheaded by the RCGA. The All-America
City Award is the oldest and most respected community
recognition program in the nation. The award recognizes
communities whose citizens work together to identify and tackle
community-wide challenges and achieve uncommon
results. Each year, the All-America City Award is given
by the National Civic League annually to only ten cities. Other
2008 winners were: Akron, Ohio; New Haven, Connecticut;
Kissimmee-Osceola County, Florida; Goodyear, Arizona; Aurora,
Colorado; Cerritos, California; Lenoir, North Carolina;
Gladstone, Missouri; and Reidsville, North Carolina.

National Park
Service
The National Park Service will host public
meetings on June 25 and July 1 regarding the Arch Grounds and
Old Courthouse. The June 25 meeting will be from 5-8 pm, at the
Visitor and Education Center in Forest Park; the July 1 meeting
is 3:00-6:30 pm at the Old Courthouse. The format is "open
house" style, whereby the public can see and comment on 5
alternative management plan updates developed by the NPS. This
process was prompted by the initiatives of the Danforth
Foundation and a Mayoral-appointed advisory task force. Among
their recommendations: a major destination attraction such as
museum or other cultural attraction of world class design that
would complement the Arch. It would be funded, operated and
managed by a regional not-for-profit trust. You are encouraged
to attend one or both meetings, urging the Park Service to:
think big; accommodate a major destination attraction on the
grounds; and cover the highway.
Metro
Metro's proposed fare increases include the
possible elimination of the lunch-time free fare zone in
downtown. It is presently in effect from 11:30 am and 1:30 pm,
Mon-Fri for travel between Union Station and Laclede's Landing.
Since riders board trains that are already traversing downtown,
eliminating this service is not likely to reduce Metro's cost or
increase its revenue. Public hearings on all proposed fare
changes will include one at City Hall, Room 208, on June 23,
from 11:00 to 12:30 pm. A summary public meeting will be at
Metro HQ (707 N 1st) June 25, from 6:00 - 7:30 pm. Each hearing
will begin with a 30-minute description of the possible changes
and the reasons the changes are proposed. The remaining time
will be available for comments. Click
here to view the Public Meeting notice, dates and times. Or,
comments may be forwarded via email to
FareIncrease2008@metrostlouis.org; orally by calling
800-923-3029; in writing to Metro, 707 N. 1st Street, St. Louis,
MO 63102, Attn: Planning - Fare Increase 2008. All comments must
be received by close of business Thursday, June 26, 2008.
